Inside Guide - Trinidad and Tobago

A small, relatively affluent island state, Trinidad and Tobago is one of the world’s largest exporters of natural gas. Industry has been developed on the back of oil and gas extraction, and although the sector accounts for about 40 per cent of GDP, it contributes to only 5 per cent of employment. Youth unemployment is higher compared to adult rates; in 2011 youth unemployment was 12.1 per cent compared with 3.7 per cent for adults. Likewise graduates often struggle to find jobs that are commensurate with their qualifications, and many of the jobs that exist are temporary and insecure. Emigration, especially of the well-educated and skilled, remains an ongoing issue. Education is a high priority and there has been a substantial increase in the tertiary participation rate in the last decade, rising from seven per cent in 2001 to 40 per cent in 2008. The government has fully subsidised undergraduate education since 2004. UNESCO estimates that just over 5,100 students from Trinidad and Tobago studied abroad in 2011, with 33 per cent going to the US and 15 per cent to the UK. This report examines the island country, providing an overview of key trends and offering insights on how to capitalise on potential higher education opportunities.
