The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged from a quiet, underdeveloped country to become one of the Middle East’s important economic centres and a thriving global hub. As the UAE strives to build a knowledge-based economy while reducing its dependence on a foreign talent, enhancing the skills of the local population and providing opportunities for alternative pathways to careers and professions, TVET will play a significant role in helping the UAE to fulfill its economic and social ambitions.
Amid the efforts to develop a national TVET strategy and a more coherent education system, the UAE has made many strategic investments in education that have reinforced the significance of the sector. Recognising the importance of a skilled and qualified workforce to support further economic and social development, TVET is perceived a critical tool for building a robust labour market and addressing Emirati skill development, human capital and employability challenges. This special report provides insight into the UAE, examines the current state of play in vocational education and training, and considers some of the challenges and opportunities for international training providers, suppliers and educators.
