Country Brief - China 2017

China has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past four decades as it has shifted from a centrally-planned to a market-based economy and the government aims to create a “moderately prosperous society” by 2020. The country still faces many challenges including its ageing population, shrinking workforce, environmental issues, and the impact of the recent slowdown, but millions of people have already been pulled out of poverty and China now has a large, growing and increasingly wealthy consumer class. Education is a government priority as the means to create and sustain a knowledge- and innovation-led economy and the HE sector is benefiting from investment, internationalisation and increasing autonomy, with the best institutions competing in global rankings. Education is also a popular priority, attracting more consumer spending than anything else apart from travel, and a high proportion of the population are reported to aspire to an overseas education for their children, meaning China remains a key market for international recruiters.
